Archon buffs PoE 2 received their largest boost with patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients, released on May 29, 2026. Attacking no longer removes most of them, Foci with the Bonded modifier became stronger, one duration notable was reworked, and Archon of Undeath was added for minion builds. Patch 0.5.5 followed with the Dominion anointment, changing the way Archon cycling works. Here’s a brief guide to Archon buffs: what they do, how those effects play out, and how to use them.
What Archon Buffs Do
An Archon buff temporarily gives a playstyle a major boost. Elemental Archon suits spellcasters, while Nature’s Archon strengthens plant skills and Archon of Undeath supports minion builds.
The basic rules stay the same across them:
- Each Archon buff lasts 10 seconds by default.
- You cannot gain a new one while you already have one.
- After it ends, there is a 20 second recovery period before you can gain another.
Elemental Archon, for example, gives 25% more elemental damage with spells. Archon of Undeath gives 25% more minion damage and a big boost to Command skill cooldown recovery.
What Changed for Archon Buffs
| Patch | Change |
|---|---|
| 0.5.0 (May 29, 2026) | Archon buffs are no longer lost when you attack. That drawback now applies to Elemental Archon only. |
| 0.5.0 | The Energising Archon notable now gives 30% increased Archon duration, replacing its Energy Shield recharge bonus. |
| 0.5.0 | The Bonded modifier on Foci now gives 20% increased effect of Archon buffs on you (up from 15%). |
| 0.5.0 | Archon of Undeath was added near the Puppet Master cluster on the passive tree, for Command skill and minion builds. |
| 0.5.5 (Sept 4, 2026) | The Dominion hidden anointment became available for amulets. It halves the effect of Archon buffs but removes the recovery period. |
I found no official Archon-specific changes in the 0.5.1 to 0.5.5 notes beyond Dominion, though some build guides mention small later buffs to Archon of Undeath. Check the official patch notes thread before you spend currency on a build around a number.
What This Means for Your Build
Casters: The attack-removal rule used to make Archon awkward if you also used attacks. Since 0.5.0, that drawback only applies to Elemental Archon, so other Archon types are easier to fit into mixed builds. If you use Elemental Archon, keep attacks out of your rotation.
Minion builds: Archon of Undeath is the big new option. It pairs with Command skills, and the Puppet Master cluster sits right beside it on the tree, so many players path through both.
Everyone: Because buff duration and recovery are fixed, the best builds focus on three things: a longer buff, a shorter recovery period, and a stronger effect.
How to Get More Out of Archon Buffs

- Stretch the duration. Notables like Energising Archon and some caster weapon bases add duration.
- Shorten the recovery period. Some runes for wands and staffs make the recovery period expire faster, and the passive tree has nodes for it too.
- Boost the effect. Foci with the Bonded modifier now give 20% increased effect of Archon buffs on you.
- Consider Dominion. This amulet anointment gives 50% reduced effect of Archon buffs, and removes the recovery period. That trade only works if the uptime gain beats the lost power, so test it before you commit.
- Test in Path of Building first. Compare the build with and without Dominion. If you need to import gear, our guide on how to copy an item from PoE trade into PoB shows how.
Archon Buffs and the Market
When a mechanic gets stronger, the items that support it usually get more expensive. After 0.5.0, Foci with Bonded and caster bases with Archon modifiers were obvious targets. Check live listings first, and read how to trade in PoE if you are new to pricing. For the full list of recent changes, see our PoE 2 patch notes guide.
FAQ
What are Archon buffs in PoE 2? Archon buffs are temporary, powerful buffs tied to a playstyle, such as Elemental Archon for spells and Archon of Undeath for minions. Each lasts 10 seconds by default, followed by a 20 second recovery period.
Did Archon buffs get buffed in PoE 2? Yes. Patch 0.5.0 stopped most Archon buffs from being lost when you attack, increased the Bonded modifier on Foci to 20%, and changed the Energising Archon notable to boost duration.
What does the Dominion anointment do? It gives 50% reduced effect of Archon buffs and removes the recovery period after losing one. It suits builds that want constant uptime, not maximum power.
Does attacking remove Archon buffs? Since 0.5.0, only Elemental Archon is removed when you attack. Other Archon buffs are no longer lost that way.
